How to get your dog used to the car.

Having a dog get used to the car can be a challenge for some people. Here are a few useful tips:

Make sure you don’t feed your dog a big meal prior to getting into the car. Just like people, dogs can get carsick. Having a full stomach can sometimes make them sick and throw up. Feel free to give a treat in the car as a “reward” and to get them used to going in the car. Every time they go in the car give them a small cookie.

Make sure to take trips to the park, pet store, pet bakery or to playdates, not just to the vet. You don’t want your dog to associate the car with going to the vet. Vets can be a scary place for some dogs and if they think that every time they are going to go in the car they will be going to the vet, then they will be extremely hesitant and anxious to get in the car.

Finally, never leave your dog alone in the car, especially on a hot summer day. Even if it is 60 degrees out, if the sun is shining and the windows are closed, a car can heat up pretty quickly. You can cause heat stroke for your dog.
